Entrevista a Mao-chan.

Tengo nueva invitada para el diván de entrevistas, me encanta conocer todas estas percepciones distintas, espero a ustedes también les guste esta sección del blog. Desde Canadá llega la siguiente entrevistada, cosplayer y cosmaker, Mao-chan:

1. How and when did you discover cosplay and turn into a cosplayer?
I`ve discovered cosplay thanks to the news (you never know!). They did a report about our local con (Otakuthon) so I promised myself I would go there the year after. I started cosplaying then –about 6 years ago-. My first cosplays were bought on ebay….so I dont show them on my page. I was so young back then!!! I made my first creation 2 year after, when I wanted to join the masquerade (the costume competition) with some friends. It was really fun and challenging. I`ve been sewing all my cosplay since then C=.  

1. Cómo y cuándo descubriste el cosplay y te convertiste en cosplayer?

Descubrí el cosplay gracias a las noticias (uno nunca sabe!). Hicieron un reporte sobre una convención local (Otakuthon) así que me prometí a mí misma asistir el año siguiente. Inicié mi carrera como cosplayer entonces -hace 6 años-. Mi primer cosplay fue comprado en ebay...por eso no lo muestro en mi página. Era tan joven entonces! 2 años después elaboré mi primer traje porque quería participar en la mascarada (el concurso de cosplay) con unos amigos. Fue divertido y todo un reto para mí. Desde ese momento he confeccionado todos mis cosplays. :)

2. Tell us about your most recent cosplay. Why do you choose to cosplay that character? How was the making process? And is the people reaction to this cosplay as you expected?
My most recent cosplay is Harime Nui from Kill la Kill. Why? Because she`s satan disguised in a pink lolita!!! Ha ha! Jokes aside, I really loved her character. I though she was fun, original and her madness kinda got to me. I`ve never done a villain before her, so it was a first for me! He he, playing the bad/crazy girl was sure fun! 

Making her outfit turned out quite well. For the first time ever, I used a commercial pattern (from simplicity). I usually make my own pattern. In fact, I did them for every cosplay before Nui. I wanted to try sewing with a pre-made one and I liked it. Much more faster and easier >w<! The hardest part was the wig, cause it was my first time doing a more complex hair style. I`ve encountered a couples difficulties, but Im happy with the final form.

I think that people liked my cosplay. Everybody who knew Nui were happy to see me and asked for my picture (I take it as a sign of success!!! Ha ha). People are usually nice with cosplayer who embodies character they like. Nui being a giant pink cupcake makes her very lovable. I had a lot of children coming to see me and saying that I was a princess….so cute!  

2. Cuéntanos sobre tu cosplay más reciente. Por qué seleccionaste ese personaje? Qué tal fue el proceso de elaboración? La gente reaccionó a tu cosplay tan bien como querías? 

Mi cosplay más nuevo es Harime Nui de Kill la Kill. Por qué? porque es el demonio disfrazado de una rosada lolita! jaja! Hablando en serio, amé ese personaje. Pienso que es graciosa, original y su locura me atrapó. Nunca había representado a un villano. Hacer el papel de la chica mala/loca fue muy divertido! 

El proceso de crear su atuendo resultó bastante bien. Por primera vez usé un patrón comercial (por razones prácticas). Usualmente elaboro mi propio patrón. De hecho, lo hice con cada cosplay antes de Nui. Quería intentar coser con un prefabricado y me gustó. Más rápido y simple  >w<! El mayor reto fue estilizar la peluca pues es un peinado bastante complejo. Y aunque tuve algunas dificultades, estoy satisfecha con el resultado final. 

Creo que a la gente le gustó mi cosplay. Todos los que conocían el personaje se alegraban de verme y me pedían fotos (Lo cual para mí es señal de éxito!jaja). La gente es usualmente muy amable con los cosplayers que representan personajes que les agradan. Nui es un gran pastelillo rosa lo cual la hace adorable. Muchos niños se acercaban a mí a decirme que parecía una princesa... fue muy lindo.

3. ¿What is the best reaction of a fan, for any of your cosplays, that you remember?
A fan once liked my cosplay so much that she ran out to her artisan table and gave me a set of Puella Magi key chains. It was really nice of her!!! I`ve kept them and they are still decorating my fridge >w<!   

3. ¿Cuál ha sido la mejor reacción de un fan, por cualquiera de tus cosplays, que tú recuerdes? 
Una vez a una admiradora le gustó tanto mi cosplay que salió corriendo a su mesa de artesano para traerme un set de llaveros de Madoka Magica. Fue un gesto tan dulce! Aún los conservo y están decorando mi nevera >w<!

4. We want to know you better: ¿What is your typical outfit when you're not cosplaying?
Wow…it depends of the mood and the day. Im a jeans person, I wear them very often. I tend to wear a lot of black sweaters, cause they match with everything >_>. I also enjoys wearing simple cute dress….because dress are very comfortable =w=. 

Being a full time worker, I spend most of my time in my work uniform (Im a therapist)….so i guess that`s my most typical outfit XD.

4. Queremos conocerte mejor: ¿Cuál es tu atuendo usual cuando no estás haciendo cosplay?

Bueno...depende de mi ánimo y de cómo esté el día. Me gustan mucho los jeans, los uso frecuentemente. También tiendo a usar sacos negros porque combinan con todo  >_>. Otra cosa que me gusta usar son vestidos lindos y sencillos porque son muy cómodos.

Mi trabajo es muy absorbente, paso la mayor parte del tiempo con mi uniforme (soy terapeuta)... así que creo que ese es mi atuendo más típico. XD

5. You, girl, have beautiful League of Legends cosplays! Do you play LoL? Who is your favorite champion?
I sure do!!! Im a lvl 30 and been playing for a good 3 years. I remember the new champ when I signed in was Fizz…and after that Ahri. I think I`ve always got a thing for her, because she was the first new champion when I started playing.But truly, I really enjoy playing Lux and Annie. Other champs I like very much are : Sona, Ahri, Morgana, Leona, Zyra, Nidalee, Caitlyn and Vayne (with which I got my first pentakill!!! *n*).  

5. Tienes cosplays geniales de League of Legends! Juegas LoL? Cuál es tu campeón favorito?
Sí, juego! Soy nivel 30 y llevo alrededor de 3 años jugando. Recuerdo que el campeón nuevo cuando entré era Fizz y que luego salió Ahri. Siempre he tenido una fascinación por ella debido a que fue el campeón que llegó cuando empecé a jugar. Pero, la verdad, disfruto más jugar con Lux y Annie. Otros campeones que me gustan mucho son: Sona, Ahri, Morgana, Leona, Zyra, Nidalee, Caitlyn y Vayne (con quien obtuve mi primer pentakill! *n*).

6. How do you think cosplay and anime culture are evolving in your country?
The cosplay/anime culture is still young in Canada. We will have our first year of competition for world cosplay summit (and its the big news lately)! But I think it is growing very fast. I remember my first year at the con, we were about 1500 attendees….now we`re over the 15k. It`s nice cause there is more and more talented cosplayers out there!  

6. Cómo crees que están evolucionando las culturas del anime y el cosplay en tu país?

La cultura anime/cosplay es aún joven en Canadá. Será el primer año que tendremos competencia para el World Cosplay Summit (es la noticia del momento)! Pero creo que está creciendo rápidamente. Recuerdo que el primer año de la convención eramos alrededor de 1.500 participantes... ahora supero los 15k de asistencia. Es lindo porque cada vez hay más y más cosplayers talentosos por ahí.

7. How many conventions do you usually attend in a year? And how do you choose the cosplay to wear in a convention?
I usually attend to 3 to 4 cons (cons are expensives =w=). I choose my cosplay depending on the weather, the location and if I will have a group or not. I used to be a solo cosplayer….but the more you have cosplayer friends, the more likely you are to end up doing group cosplay (which is way more fun!). My goal is to –at least- have one new outfit to present per con. It gives something new to the fans and also something to work on between conventions. 

7. A cuántas convenciones asistes usualmente en un año? Y cómo eliges el cosplay que llevarás a la convención?

Usualmente voy a 3 o 4 convenciones (porque son costosas  =w=). Decido qué cosplay llevar dependiendo del clima, el lugar y sí hay posibilidad de grupal o no. Antes solía trabajar sola...pero entre más amigos cosplayers tengas, más probable es que termines haciendo cosplays grupales (lo cual es mucho más divertido!). Mi objetivo es tener, al menos, un nuevo atuendo para presentar en cada convención. Da algo nuevo a los fans y me mantiene ocupada en el tiempo que pasa entre convenciones.

8. Now let's talk about your working environment. ¿Do you have an especial room for your cosplay projects?
Absolutely not! I am living on my own in a cute 4 and half a room appartment. I sew in my dining room, but I put back everything in place when i am done crafting (its the house rule!). I like to call it the ghetto way of cosplay! I cut my foam directly on the ceramic tiles of the floor and sands my wood props in the bathroom (easier to clean after the mess)…. 

8. Ahora hablemos de tu ambiente de trabajo. ¿Tienes un cuarto especial para trabajar en tus cosplays?

Para nada! Vivo sola en un lindo apartamento de cuatro habitaciones y media. Coso en el comedor, pero vuelvo a poner todo en su lugar cuando he terminado (son las reglas de la casa!). Me gusta llamarlo la forma extrema de hacer cosplay! Corto la espuma directamente sobre las baldosas de cerámica del piso y lijo mis accesorios de madera en el baño (así me resulta más fácil limpiar tanto desastre.

9. How important are the cosplay photographers (kamekos) for the cosplayer's work?
It depends of what you want to achieve, really. But today, with the social medias, the growing community and everything, if you want people to remember you, you need pictures. And good pictures sure are a plus if you want to highlight all the hard work you put on your cosplay.

9. Qué tan importantes son los fotógrafos de cosplay (kamekos) para el trabajo del cosplayer? 

Realmente depende de lo que quieras conseguir. Pero hoy en día, con las redes sociales, las comunidades de cosplayers creciendo rápidamente y todo eso, si quieres que la gente te recuerde, necesitas fotos. Y las buenas fotos son una gran forma de mostrar el fruto de tu dedicación como cosplayer. 

10. What message can you give for the people that is starting cosplaying and cosmaking?
Never give up. It will be hard. You will cry, sweat, bleed (we hurt ourselves sometimes…=w=.), but all that hard work will be worth when you will wear your cosplay for the first time and realise you actually made something with your bare hand. There is no greater satisfaction then accomplish a goal that meant a lot to you.

10. Qué mensaje das a quienes están empezando la carrera de cosplayers y cosmakers?

No se rindan. Será duro. Llorarán, sudarán, sangrarán (los accidentes ocurren...=w=.), pero todo ese trabajo duro valdrá la pena cuando puedas usar el cosplay por primera vez y te des cuenta de que tú lo has hecho con tus propias manos. No hay mayor satisfacción que alcanzar un objetivo que significa mucho para ti.
